What is brighter? Bulb, CFL, or LED?

Posted On 06/29/2009

The lumens or 'brightness' measure is an important one to look at. Incandescent and CFL bulbs shoot light in 270 degrees all around them. LEDs are built to shoot light in 15, 30, 45, 120, or 180 degrees depending on the bulb. The reason is because LEDs are directional lighting. They shoot light in the direction that you want it. So for example lets look at a 4 foot tube light. These are in every office that you have ever been into. You will notice that the bulb shoots light in 360 degrees, typically consumes 40 watts and gives off about 4,100 lumans. Compare that to an LED tube that is 4 feet long, shoots light 120 degrees downward towards where you are working, and uses 15 watts, gives off 1,500 lumens. At first glance you would think that the LED is not as bright, but actually it is brighter. If the LEDs shot off in 360 degrees the luman output would be 4,500 lumens. 400 lumens brighter than the fluorescent. The point is, just like in tubes, LED bulbs do not shoot light all over the place, thus wasting the light and wattage the way incandescent and CFLs do. A 5 watt LED bulb, 120 degrees, 250 lumens is equivalent to a 40 watt, 270 degree, 563 lumen incandescent. Incandescents and CFLs that shoot light in a wider swath need to have higher lumens to "cover all their ground" evenly. LEDs are not based on this principle.

How much can your property value rise by adding LED lighting?

How much can your property value rise by adding LED lighting?

A real case:

Recently Dave F. of Los Angeles, CA, purchased 177 LED bulbs for the common area of his 125 unit complex in Orange, TX.

He replaced 65 watt incandescent bulbs with 6 watt LED bulbs. This measured a savings of over 90% on his utility bill for the portion dedicated to lighting. This positive change saved Dave F. $37.18 PER BULB per year. It added $464.74 of property value to his complex PER BULB. At an 8% cap rate. A total property value increase of $82,258!

How much did it cost Dave F. to replace the bulbs? Answer: $9,549. With the energy savings that the 6 watt bulbs save, Dave F. will experience an ROI on the LED bulbs in 1 year 3 months and 25 days. As the cost of electricity rises he will find his investment to have an even higher rate of return.

As an added benefit high power LED lights last for 50,000 hours, so Dave's maintenance staff does not have to purchase and replace bulbs for the next 12 years 5 months and 13 days.
The cost of replacement bulbs and labor were not calculated in the above figures.

What is a Watt?

Posted On 05/06/2009

Watts are a measure of energy consumed, not brightness!
Brightness is typically measured in lumans or foot candles.
So if you own a 100 watt light bulb and you have it on for 730 hours (i.e., all month) you would consume 73 kWh.
You can see that we are now dealing with Kilowatt hours which is what you get charged for on your electricity bill.
The lower the watts on the bulbs you use the lower your electricity bill!

LEDs on Display

Posted On 04/30/2009

Earlier this week Standard LED was an exhibitor at the National Apartment Association's first annual Green Conference in Phoenix, AZ. It was a great event!
The interest in our LED products was explosive! Everyone was so impressed with the brightness of the light they produce.
There were so many wonderful folks who attended that are inspired to contribute from an environmental standpoint to the benefit of our world.
We were accompanied by companies that help owners and property managers save water, energy, and the use renewable resources such as solar power. We look forward to attending the event next year.

What would be the footcandles brightness of the "Dodger" Street Light from a height of 20 ft. to the ground directly below the light?

Why LEDs?

Posted On 03/17/2009

LEDs have been around for over three decades. Until recently LED lighting has been used in applications such as your coffee maker and cable box. You know those little green and red lights that light up when you turn your appliances on or off.

It is only recently that LEDs have been produced that for broad applications that are, shall we say, useful to all of us. Let’s face it; if you can’t screw it in, it’s probably not much use to you. Neither a MR-16 bulb nor a GU-10 bulb helps you much. (I can hear you saying “what the heck are those.”)
What you want is what you are used to, so at www.standard-led.com that is what we sell you.

The number one use of electricity at your properties and/or business is derived from the use of lighting. Typically light usage accounts for 60% of your electricity bill. A much smaller percentage of electrical use comes from heating/cooling and plugging in appliances. LEDs significantly reduce your electrical use. Why use a 60 watt bulb when you can use a 7 watt?

Wattage is the measure of electricity used, not brightness! Reduce your wattage and you reduce your electricity expenses. We are all looking to reduce our expenses no matter what the economy is doing. Visit http://www.ledlightsledlightbulbs.com/Savings.php to view the exact amount of dollar saving of a 60 watt incandescent bulb vs. a 7 watt LED.

Who Should Use LEDs?

Posted On 03/17/2009

LEDs have many applications and offer tremendous advantages over all other types of lighting. For example lower electricity costs, focused lighting, a 50,000 hour life, and no UV or IR rays. But who exactly is best suited to install LEDs and benefit from them? The short answer is everyone. But the more specific answer is anyon who is looking to save money on thier electricity bill. More specificially, anyone who has a lighting fixture on for any long period of time. View the savings page at: http://www.ledlightsledlightbulbs.com/Savings.php There you will see the benefits of installing LEDs vs. other types of lighting and the overall cost savings. You will notice how much more money you will be paying with other types of lighting over time compared to LED lights.

Typically, commercial properties and businesses have their lights on for at least eight (8) hours a day and many times much more. These applications are well suited to consider LED lighting as a replacement to what is currently used. LEDs in home use are also a perfectly normal application too.

No matter what motivates you to install LED light bulbs and other LED lighting, there is no wrong answer. Many are looking to be a part of the 'green movement'. Others, such a business and property owners, may be more motivated in the cost savings that LEDs provide.
